Jan Stenbeck was the smartest person I ever met. Not smart in the way academics are smart. Smart in the way that changes the world. He saw what nobody else saw. He understood that mobile telephony would revolutionise countries that hadn't even laid copper wire yet. He broke state socialist monopolies when everyone said it was impossible. He built empires out of ideas.

Every day Jan received a binder. Two people read all the world's important newspapers and magazines for him and pulled out what mattered. The things others missed. The faint signals that foreshadow great change.

I worked with Jan. I learned from him. And I have never forgotten that binder. JansBrief is my tribute to him, a modern version: global, AI-driven, available to everyone with ambition.

The earth is getting darker

Something fundamental is changing about our planet's relationship with light. New research confirms that Earth's albedo — the fraction of incoming sunlight it reflects back into space — is declining at a rate that has caught climate scientists off guard. The planet is absorbing more energy than it radiates, and the imbalance is accelerating.

Insurance actuaries have already begun adjusting models for accelerated sea-level rise. But the albedo data suggests that even the revised models may be conservative.

The scientific community is now debating whether geoengineering proposals — particularly stratospheric aerosol injection, which would artificially increase reflectivity — deserve faster-track research. The valley that said no to cement

Raja Waseem Ahmed, a local activist, has spent years organising villagers — loquat farmers, smallholders, people with no legal representation and no political connections — against corporations seeking to quarry the valley's limestone hills. His argument is sharp: no corporation can buy the "right to destroy" an ecosystem that sustains a community.

What makes the story remarkable is not the David-versus-Goliath framing — that is common enough. It is the method. Ahmed and his allies have combined environmental documentation, legal challenges and relentless social media pressure to slow the extraction permits. They have mapped peacock habitats and rare mountain deer populations to build a biodiversity case that resonates with courts. They have turned a local land dispute into a question about who owns a landscape — the people who live on it, or the company that wants to dig it up.

The cement companies have political cover. Punjab's industrial lobby is powerful, and infrastructure demand is enormous in a country that needs roads, dams and housing. The economic argument for extraction is easy to make in aggregate. But Ahmed insists the aggregate ignores the specific: this valley, these orchards, these animals, these families.

There is something stubbornly clarifying about a fight like this. No international NGO is running it. No foreign foundation is bankrolling it. It is a local man with a smartphone, a knowledge of his own landscape and a refusal to accept that the powerful always win. The scrub forests of Kahoon Valley will not make headlines in London or New York. But the principle at stake — that communities have standing against extraction, that local knowledge is evidence, that courage in a small place matters — is universal.

The outcome is still uncertain. But the fight itself is the point.

8 — Today's Wisdom

Daniel Ek just got Neko Health valued at 67 billion kronor on the idea that we should scan ourselves healthy before we get sick. It's a massive bet, and I believe it points to something bigger than any single company.

We've built our entire healthcare system around waiting. Waiting for the symptoms to appear, waiting for the referral, waiting for the diagnosis, waiting for the treatment. It's like building fire departments without smoke detectors. Every rational person understands that it's cheaper and better to catch cancer at stage one than at stage four, to intercept cardiovascular disease before the heart attack strikes, to spot the diabetes markers before the organ damage is a fact. And yet our entire infrastructure has been optimized for the opposite. We reward intervention, not prevention.

What makes this moment different is that technology has finally caught up with the logic. AI-driven diagnostics, full-body scanning, and large datasets make it possible to screen populations at a fraction of what it costs to treat them after the fact. The question is no longer whether preventive healthcare works, but why we still accept a system that in practice punishes people for not getting sick clearly enough, fast enough.

Ek is building a company. But what he's really challenging is an entire culture's relationship with illness. It's about time.
