Jan Stenbeck was the smartest person I ever met. Not smart in the way academics are smart. Smart in the way that changes the world. He saw what nobody else saw. He understood that mobile telephony would revolutionise countries that hadn't even laid copper wire yet. He broke state socialist monopolies when everyone said it was impossible. He built empires out of ideas.

Every day Jan received a binder. Two people read all the world's important newspapers and magazines for him and pulled out what mattered. The things others missed. The faint signals that foreshadow great change.

I worked with Jan. I learned from him. And I have never forgotten that binder. JansBrief is my tribute to him, a modern version: global, AI-driven, available to everyone with ambition.

The US government is about to mine the deep sea — and almost nobody noticed

While the world watches wars and wildfires, Washington quietly announced plans to lease the ocean floor around American Samoa for commercial deep-sea mining — a decision that could set the template for how humanity exploits the last untouched ecosystem on earth.

Mongabay reports that the Marine Minerals Administration, a new federal agency formed by merging the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, published its intention to offer mineral extraction rights in waters surrounding American Samoa despite significant public opposition. The announcement marks the most concrete step any major nation has taken toward industrialising the deep ocean, moving the debate from theoretical to operational.

The deep sea floor around Pacific island territories contains polymetallic nodules rich in manganese, cobalt, nickel and copper — metals essential to batteries, semiconductors and the entire energy transition supply chain. The strategic logic is straightforward: the United States currently depends on China for processing most of these critical minerals. Domestic deep-sea deposits could, in theory, reduce that dependency. But "in theory" is doing enormous work in that sentence.

What makes this a signal rather than routine resource policy is the convergence of several forces. First, the International Seabed Authority, the UN body that governs mining in international waters, has been deadlocked for years over regulations, with a coalition of Pacific Island nations and environmental groups blocking permitting. By moving in its own territorial waters, the US sidesteps that impasse entirely — and establishes a precedent that other nations with Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Ocean claims will follow. Norway has already approved exploration in its Arctic waters. Japan has been piloting extraction technology near Okinawa. The American move transforms a trickle into a pattern.

Second, the environmental science is genuinely uncertain. Deep-sea ecosystems operate on timescales of centuries. Nodule fields host species found nowhere else. Sediment plumes from mining could travel hundreds of kilometres, smothering filter-feeding organisms across vast areas. The peer-reviewed literature is thin because so few experiments have been conducted at scale — which means the mining will itself become the experiment, with results visible only decades later.

Third, the political dynamics are toxic. American Samoa's residents — US nationals who cannot vote for president — were not meaningfully consulted. Indigenous Pacific communities have been the most vocal opponents of deep-sea mining globally, from the Cook Islands to Papua New Guinea. Overriding their objections while extracting minerals from their waters recapitulates a colonial pattern that the Biden and now the current administration have both rhetorically condemned.

The deeper issue is institutional. No regulatory framework exists for monitoring deep-sea mining's environmental impact in real time. The technology to extract is advancing faster than the science to assess consequences. And once leases are signed, the legal and financial momentum makes reversal nearly impossible. The ocean floor is about to be opened on a bet that we can manage what we do not yet understand.

It is, in the most literal sense, a technical workaround of a political failure.

The collectors are not a substitute for national water policy. But they are functioning now, for people who need water now, in places where the state's solution was "wait." In the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on earth, villages capture water from fog using simple mesh nets stretched across mountain ridges. No electricity, no pumps, no permits. Just mesh, gravity, and local knowledge. The authorities said the solution required desalination plants, pipelines, billions. The villages waited. Then they stopped waiting and built it themselves.

That's the kind of innovation I believe in. Not the kind that requires a committee, a budget, and ten years of studies, but the kind that makes gatekeepers irrelevant. The world's most transformative technologies have almost always shared that quality. They don't ask for permission. They work before anyone has had a chance to say no.

We live in an era that worships complexity. The bigger the problem, the more advanced the solution must be, we think. But that's rarely true. The Chilean fog collectors don't solve the entire country's water crisis, but they provide water today to people who need water today. And every day they work, they prove that the simplest answer is often the bravest one.

I've been building companies for thirty years and the most important lesson is still the same: start. Not when the conditions are perfect, not when everyone's on board, not when the money is there. Start with what you have, where you are, now. The future belongs to those who build it instead of waiting for it.
