Jan Stenbeck was the smartest person I ever met. Not smart in the way academics are smart. Smart in the way that changes the world. He saw what nobody else saw. He understood that mobile telephony would revolutionise countries that hadn't even laid copper wire yet. He broke state socialist monopolies when everyone said it was impossible. He built empires out of ideas.

Every day Jan received a binder. Two people read all the world's important newspapers and magazines for him and pulled out what mattered. The things others missed. The faint signals that foreshadow great change.

I worked with Jan. I learned from him. And I have never forgotten that binder. JansBrief is my tribute to him, a modern version: global, AI-driven, available to everyone with ambition.

University computer science departments cannot produce them fast enough. The solution, increasingly, is to skip the queue entirely — identify mathematical prodigies early, immerse them in real lab environments, and compress the traditional pipeline by years.

Several companies have formalised this into structured programmes. Teenagers attend weeks-long residential camps where they work alongside PhD researchers. Those who perform are offered research internships, and the most promising receive job offers contingent on completing a degree — or, in some cases, regardless. The implicit contract: we invest in you now, you owe us your twenties.

This is not a Chinese invention. Silicon Valley has a long history of teenage recruits, from the early days of Microsoft to more recent cases at DeepMind. But the scale and systematisation in China is different. These are not one-off hires of singular prodigies. They are industrial programmes designed to create a reliable supply chain of human talent, mirroring the way China industrialised semiconductor fabrication or battery production — by identifying the constraint and throwing institutional weight at it.

The implications are uncomfortable. Locking teenagers into corporate pipelines before they have experienced intellectual freedom raises questions about academic independence, creative development, and the long-term quality of research produced by people who have never worked outside the organisation that recruited them at sixteen. There is a fine line between talent development and talent capture.

But the competitive pressure is real. American labs are haemorrhaging researchers to Chinese competitors offering superior compensation and patriotic appeal. Europe barely competes. And the generation of AI researchers trained in the 2010s is ageing into management. Whoever controls the next cohort — the twenty-year-olds of 2030 — controls the frontier.

Wave's founders — American-Senegalese, trained partly in Silicon Valley — saw the gap between what the technology cost and what customers were charged, and decided it was indefensible. They slashed fees to roughly one percent, built an agent network that bypassed the need for bank accounts, and grew so fast that by mid-2026 they are matching Orange Money on transaction volume across the zone.

The response has been predictable. Orange has cut its own fees — something it never did voluntarily. The regional central bank, the BCEAO, has introduced interoperability rules that in theory level the playing field but in practice erode the walled garden that protected the incumbent. Regulators who spent years accommodating a comfortable monopoly are now scrambling to manage genuine competition.

What makes Wave interesting is not the technology — mobile money is well-understood. It is the willingness to enter a market where the political and regulatory deck was stacked against outsiders, where the incumbent had deep ties to the former colonial power, and where the conventional wisdom held that margins had to be high because Africa was "risky." Wave bet that the risk was actually in not competing — that millions of unserved customers represented demand waiting for someone brave enough to price honestly.

The result is more money in the pockets of ordinary people across Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and beyond. Not because of a government programme or an NGO initiative, but because someone decided that a monopoly's margin was a customer's loss, and acted on it.

A family that has spent years building a reputation one brisket at a time simply did more of what they already knew how to do. The twenty thousand pounds is not a vanity metric. It is a measure of trust — in their own craft, in the demand they could see coming, and in the bet that showing up relentlessly is its own form of strategy.

8 — Today's Wisdom

China is recruiting fifteen-year-olds straight into its AI labs, and the reflexive reaction in the West is to be outraged. That it's exploitation, that children should be allowed to be children, that academic freedom requires you to first sit through ten years of theory before you're allowed to touch anything that matters. But that reaction reveals more about us than it does about China.

The truth is that we in Europe have built an education system that rewards patience, not talent. We sort by age, not by ability. A mathematically gifted sixteen-year-old in Stockholm is forced through the same pace as everyone else, not because it benefits her but because the system can't handle exceptions. It's called equality but functions as waste.

I'm not saying China's model is right. Locking teenagers into corporate pipelines before they've had time to think an original thought is talent capture, not talent development. But the answer to that can't be for us to carry on as if nothing has happened. The answer has to be creating environments where young gifted people can accelerate without becoming someone's property. Open labs, unrestricted scholarships, mentorship without contracts.

Europe can afford this. We have the universities, we have the resources, we even have the values. The only thing we lack is the will to treat exceptional talent for what it actually is: our most important strategic asset.
