Jan Stenbeck was the smartest person I ever met. Not smart in the way academics are smart. Smart in the way that changes the world. He saw what nobody else saw. He understood that mobile telephony would revolutionise countries that hadn't even laid copper wire yet. He broke state socialist monopolies when everyone said it was impossible. He built empires out of ideas.

Every day Jan received a binder. Two people read all the world's important newspapers and magazines for him and pulled out what mattered. The things others missed. The faint signals that foreshadow great change.

I worked with Jan. I learned from him. And I have never forgotten that binder. JansBrief is my tribute to him, a modern version: global, AI-driven, available to everyone with ambition.

India's data centers are eating villages alive

The signal is quiet but the ground is shaking. Across India's western and southern states, a land grab is underway that echoes the worst chapters of industrial enclosure — except this time the enclosers come bearing fiber optic cables and the logos of the world's most valuable companies.

Rest of World reports that India's data center boom — driven by insatiable demand from AI workloads and cloud computing — is systematically displacing rural communities while offering them almost nothing in return. State governments, desperate to position themselves as Asia's next digital infrastructure hub, are offering tech companies tax breaks, cheap land acquired through compulsory purchase mechanisms, and expedited environmental clearances. The communities being moved off that land are receiving compensation packages that, in several documented cases, amount to a fraction of the market value. Some are receiving no resettlement support at all.

The numbers are striking. India's data center capacity is projected to more than triple by 2028, with major clusters emerging in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. Each facility requires not just land but enormous quantities of water for cooling and reliable electricity — both scarce commodities in the very rural districts being targeted. Villages that once farmed groundwater-fed fields are watching their aquifers drained to cool servers they will never use.

What makes this signal distinctive is not the displacement itself — that story is as old as industry. It is the political architecture enabling it. Indian states are competing against each other in a race to the bottom on land acquisition terms, creating a domestic arbitrage that benefits global cloud providers while atomizing any coordinated resistance from affected populations. The communities lack legal sophistication, political connections, and — critically — narrative power. When a farmer in Telangana loses his land to a hyperscale facility, there is no viral moment. There is only silence.

The parallel to earlier resource extraction is uncomfortable but precise. Colonial-era mining operations took minerals and left tailings. The data center boom takes land and water and leaves behind concrete boxes that employ remarkably few local people. A typical hyperscale facility, once built, might employ 50 to 100 permanent staff — almost all of them skilled engineers recruited from cities.

This matters because India is positioning itself as the democratic alternative to China for global digital infrastructure. If that positioning rests on the same extractive relationships with rural populations that characterize authoritarian development models, the democratic label becomes hollow. And if the water tables drop far enough, the data centers themselves will face an existential resource crisis.

The weak signal is not that data centers are being built in India. Everyone knows that. The signal is that the governance model enabling it is structurally indistinguishable from the models democracies claim to oppose — and that no one with power seems interested in fixing it before it becomes unfixable.

Now: State governments across India are locked in competitive bidding wars for data center investment, offering land and tax concessions that strip rural communities of assets and livelihood without adequate compensation. Water-intensive cooling systems are drawing down aquifers in regions already facing agricultural water stress. The affected communities have no coordinated legal or political vehicle for resistance.

Soon: As AI workloads escalate and hyperscale operators seek ever-larger sites, the land acquisition model will spread to new states and new countries — Indonesia, Vietnam, and parts of East Africa are all courting the same operators with similar incentive packages. If India's governance failures go unaddressed, they become the template. Expect the first major legal challenges within 18 months, likely brought by environmental NGOs rather than the displaced communities themselves.

Later: The deeper question is whether democratic legitimacy can survive a development model that treats rural populations as inputs to be optimized away. India's data center buildout is a test case for a global tension: the infrastructure demands of artificial intelligence are enormous, geographically specific, and politically invisible. If the countries building this infrastructure cannot develop governance models that distribute both costs and benefits fairly, the social contract underlying digital modernity will crack — not with a dramatic rupture, but with the slow erosion of trust that makes populist backlash inevitable. In Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, in India's Maharashtra state, something has happened that nobody planned. Women — from the Gond and Kolam tribal communities that live on the reserve's fringes — are now working as safari guides, naturalists, and jeep drivers. Tourists arrive expecting tigers. What stops them first is the sight of women in khaki uniforms climbing aboard the vehicles.

These are not token hires. The women have passed the same naturalist examinations as their male counterparts. They track pugmarks, identify bird calls, and manage tourist groups through terrain they have known since childhood — terrain that, for generations, their communities were told they had no professional right to interpret. The reserve's administration did not launch a gender program. Individual women applied, were initially refused or ignored, and applied again. Local NGOs provided exam coaching. The first few who broke through created a pull effect: younger women from surrounding villages now see guiding as a viable career.

The economics tell the real story. A qualified safari guide in Tadoba earns enough to support a family — in a region where most women's income options are limited to agricultural labor paying a fraction of that. The women guides have also changed the product: tourist feedback consistently rates them higher on ecological knowledge and patience. Several now lead specialized birding and botanical safaris that command premium pricing.

What makes this remarkable is the context. Rural Maharashtra is deeply conservative. The idea of tribal women driving jeeps full of wealthy urban tourists through a tiger forest would have been dismissed as fantasy a decade ago. No government decree made it happen. No international development agency designed it. It happened because a handful of individuals decided the existing structure was absurd and found their way around it — one exam, one application, one refusal overcome at a time.

The reserve now has a waiting list of women applicants. The incumbents — male guides who initially resisted — have largely accepted the change, because the women bring in more business. The market, once allowed to operate, did what markets do: it rewarded competence regardless of origin.

8 — Today's Wisdom

India's states are currently competing over who can offer tech companies the cheapest land, the most water, and the least resistance for building data centers. Farmers are losing their land, their wells, and their future, and getting almost nothing in return. It's not news that infrastructure demands sacrifices. What makes this interesting is that India is doing it in the name of democracy.

I've been building companies for over thirty years and I know that things need to be built. Data centers need to be built. AI capacity needs to be built. But I also know that the way you build determines whether what you build will last. If you take land from people without fair compensation, if you drain their water to cool servers they'll never use, if you do it without transparency and without sharing the gains, then you're not building infrastructure. You're building a revolt.

Democratic India wants to be the alternative to China. Good. The world needs that alternative. But an alternative that copies the worst aspects of the authoritarian model and just slaps a democratic label on the package is no alternative at all. Democracy means that those who bear the costs also get a say in how they're distributed. That's not an obstacle to building. It's the only thing that makes building sustainable. India's tech boom can be extraordinary, but only if someone with power decides that the farmer in Telangana is not a obstacle to route around but a citizen.
