Jan Stenbeck was the smartest person I ever met. Not smart in the way academics are smart. Smart in the way that changes the world. He saw what nobody else saw. He understood that mobile telephony would revolutionise countries that hadn't even laid copper wire yet. He broke state socialist monopolies when everyone said it was impossible. He built empires out of ideas.

Every day Jan received a binder. Two people read all the world's important newspapers and magazines for him and pulled out what mattered. The things others missed. The faint signals that foreshadow great change.

I worked with Jan. I learned from him. And I have never forgotten that binder. JansBrief is my tribute to him, a modern version: global, AI-driven, available to everyone with ambition.

The grassroots AI assemblies nobody invited

Something is stirring in church halls in Nairobi, community centres in Hyderabad, and co-working spaces in Detroit. Local groups — none of them affiliated with Big Tech, none funded by governments — are convening ordinary people to discuss, debate, and shape the artificial intelligence systems that are already reshaping their lives. They call themselves different things: AI clubs, community labs, citizen assemblies. What they share is a conviction that the people most affected by AI should not be the last to have a say.

In Kenya, a collective called the Nairobi AI Ethics Circle has been running monthly sessions since early 2026, bringing together motorcycle taxi drivers, small traders, and university students to discuss how automated lending algorithms determine their access to credit. In India, a Hyderabad-based group has been documenting how AI-driven crop advisory tools — pushed by state agricultural departments — give recommendations calibrated for large landholders that can actively harm smallholders following the same advice. In Detroit, a neighbourhood association has started training residents to audit the facial recognition systems used by local law enforcement, using freely available open-source tools.

These are not protest movements. They are something more unusual: attempts to build local competence. The Nairobi group has produced a "community audit" of three lending apps, identifying patterns of bias that no regulator had flagged. The Hyderabad collective submitted its findings to India's Ministry of Agriculture. The Detroit group trained forty residents in the basics of algorithmic bias detection over six weekends.

The movement has no headquarters, no manifesto, and no charismatic founder — which is precisely what makes it interesting. It has emerged simultaneously in multiple places, driven by a shared realisation: that waiting for national governments or international bodies to govern AI is like waiting for the bus in a city that never built a bus route. The World Economic Forum and the UN have both launched AI governance initiatives, but these tend to produce reports that circulate among the same policy elites who already understand the problem. The grassroots groups are doing something different — building literacy and leverage from the bottom up.

There are legitimate questions about scale and staying power. Many of these groups are small, volunteer-run, and dependent on a few energetic individuals. The privilege critique is real: attending evening workshops on algorithmic justice requires time, energy, and a certain baseline of education. But the same critique could be levelled at every civic movement in history, from abolitionism to environmentalism, in its early stages.

What makes this a signal rather than a footnote is the pattern. When the same idea emerges independently in three continents, it usually means the underlying conditions have ripened. The lending algorithms in Nairobi, the crop tools in Hyderabad, and the surveillance systems in Detroit are different technologies — but they share a common feature: decisions made about people, without people. The grassroots AI assemblies are the first organised response from below.

Now — AI governance is being built from the kitchen table, not the conference room: The grassroots assemblies are already producing outputs that formal institutions have not. The Nairobi group's lending app audit identified discriminatory patterns months before Kenya's data protection authority flagged similar concerns. This is not accidental. People who live inside a system see its flaws before those who study it from outside. The immediate significance is that these community-level audits are creating a new category of evidence — granular, local, experiential — that regulators can use but cannot generate on their own.

Soon — Governments will face pressure to formalise citizen participation in AI oversight: As these groups multiply and professionalise, the demand for structured citizen involvement in AI regulation will grow harder to ignore. The EU's AI Act created no mechanism for community input. India's proposed Digital India Act is similarly top-down. Within two years, at least one mid-tier democracy — a Kenya, a Colombia, a Philippines — will likely pilot a formal citizen assembly on AI, modelled on the climate assemblies that France and Ireland have already tested. The question is whether such formalisation empowers or co-opts.

Later — The legitimacy of AI governance depends on who is in the room: The deeper significance is institutional. The UN is searching for a new secretary-general, and the organisation's credibility on technology governance is threadbare. International AI frameworks drafted in Geneva or New York carry little weight in communities where algorithmic systems are already making consequential decisions about credit, health, and policing. The grassroots assemblies reveal a structural mismatch: the people designing global AI norms and the people living under AI-driven systems occupy entirely different worlds. The company was founded by Pablo Palafox, a Mexican-born engineer, and has just closed a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz at a $1.2 billion valuation. What makes it interesting is not the valuation but the attack vector. The US freight brokerage industry is dominated by a handful of giants — C.H. Robinson, XPO, Echo Global — that sit on decades of relationships and proprietary data. HappyRobot does not compete with them directly. It sells to the 17,000 small and mid-size brokerages that lack the technology budgets of the incumbents but handle a huge share of American freight.

This is the pattern that matters: an outsider from an unexpected place — not Stanford, not a logistics dynasty — who identified that the real bottleneck in a trillion-dollar industry was not algorithms or data but the humble phone call. The technology is not revolutionary. Voice AI exists. Rate negotiation logic exists. What did not exist was someone willing to build for the fragmented, low-margin, chaotic world of small freight brokers — the people the giants ignore.

Palafox spent years in logistics before founding HappyRobot, learning the rhythms and frustrations of an industry where a single missed call can mean a truck drives empty for two hundred miles. The company now handles millions of calls per month. Its growth came not from marketing but from word of mouth among small operators who discovered they could suddenly compete with brokerages ten times their size.

There is something admirable about finding a billion-dollar opportunity in the gap between a phone and a truck.

A Mexican engineer with no ties to Silicon Valley or logistics dynasties has built a billion-dollar company by automating phone calls between freight brokers and truck drivers. Not quantum computers, not fusion energy, not autonomous vehicles. Phone calls. That is the most beautiful type of entrepreneurship there is.

I've seen that pattern over and over again throughout my career. The most profitable problems are rarely the most glamorous ones. They hide in the parts of the economy that no venture capitalist wants to look at because they smell of diesel and open-plan offices and binders full of bills of lading. The American logistics industry does 900 billion dollars in revenue and the matching of freight to trucks still happens via phone calls and gut feeling. Pablo Palafox saw that, built an AI tool that speaks English and Spanish with truck drivers, and sells it to the 17,000 small brokers the giants never cared about.

There's a lesson here that the entire European tech scene needs to take to heart. We're constantly chasing the next platform, the next paradigm shift, the next deep scientific breakthrough. But the real opportunity often lives in the friction. In the manual, the analog, the stuff everyone knows is inefficient but no one can be bothered to fix. The future isn't only built in the lab. It's built just as often in the phone queue.
