He understood that mobile telephony would revolutionise countries that hadn't even laid copper wire yet. He broke state socialist monopolies when everyone said it was impossible. He built empires out of ideas.

Every day Jan received a binder. Two people read all the world's important newspapers and magazines for him and pulled out what mattered. The things others missed. The faint signals that foreshadow great change.

I worked with Jan. I learned from him. And I have never forgotten that binder. JansBrief is my tribute to him, a modern version: global, AI-driven, available to everyone with ambition.

Not from a rival pharma giant with a competing molecule, but from a fundamentally different category of intervention.

The economics are stark. Semaglutide costs roughly $1,000 per month in the United States. A postbiotic supplement, if efficacy holds, could be manufactured for a fraction of that — possibly under $50. It would not require FDA approval as a drug if positioned as a supplement, though that regulatory grey zone is itself a battlefield. The implications for global health equity are obvious: obesity and type 2 diabetes are not diseases of the wealthy. They devastate populations in countries where $1,000 per month is an annual salary.

What makes this signal worth watching is not the science alone — it is the structural vulnerability it exposes. The GLP-1 giants have built their dominance on scarcity: limited manufacturing capacity, constrained supply chains, and pricing power that comes from having no real alternative. A supplement that works even partially would shatter that dynamic. It would be the generic threat that arrives not as a copycat molecule but as an entirely different category.

Pasang built a commercial operation in a place where almost every economic incentive pointed elsewhere — toward migration to Chinese cities, toward abandoning artisanal production for factory employment, toward accepting that remote plateau communities cannot sustain themselves economically. The cooperative employs over a hundred local residents in a region where formal employment is scarce and out-migration is the default.

The model is deceptively simple: take a skill that already exists in the community, organise it collectively, create a supply chain, find buyers. No venture capital. No technology platform. No external consultants parachuting in with frameworks. Just a person who looked at what was already there and built something around it.

There is a deeper point here about where real economic development happens. It rarely starts with grand plans or foreign investment. It starts with someone in a specific place who refuses to accept that their community's skills are economically worthless. Pasang did not try to disrupt the textile industry. He tried to make sure that a hundred people in Shannan could earn a living doing what they already knew how to do — and in doing so, preserved a centuries-old tradition that no government programme had managed to sustain.

Every monopoly looks unshakeable right up until the cheap alternative appears from a direction nobody saw coming. It's true of steel, it's true of telecom, and now it may be true of the most profitable drugs in history.

A small clinical study shows that dead bacteria, freeze-dried and cheap to manufacture, can get the body to produce its own GLP-1, the same hormone that Ozempic and Mounjaro mimic synthetically. The study is small, the caveats are enormous, and Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly will do everything they can to question the results. But the interesting thing isn't whether this particular study holds up. The interesting thing is what it reveals about the monopoly's vulnerability.

The entire GLP-1 industry's valuation rests on the assumption that the only way to activate these signaling pathways is through injectable peptides manufactured in complex bioreactors and sold for a thousand dollars a month. If it turns out there's another route, one that costs a fiftieth as much and doesn't require a cold chain, a prescription, or injection training, then the entire equation changes. Not because the supplement is better, but because it opens a second front that the monopolists can't control with their usual weapons: patents, regulatory lobbying, and constrained manufacturing.

I've seen this pattern before. The big players defend their position with arguments about quality and safety, and sometimes they're right. But markets that exclude the majority of the world's population through pricing are not stable. They're just waiting for their disruption.
